Unleashing Your Inner Power: Confidence-Building Techniques
Your inner power and confidence are instrumental to keeping you pushing for more and chasing after your goals! They are the forces that empower you to try new things and take risks! That’s something that’s super important in your personal life, but its impact on your professional life cannot be understated.
It helps you take the steps you need to take in order to succeed and trust yourself more. (Oh yeah, and confidence comes in clutch when selling your services, marketing your product, and/or interviewing!)
Having confidence in yourself also massively helps you unleash your inner power - something that can empower you to make better choices, stay aligned with your goals (and achieve them), and handle all the obstacles life throws at you with a little more ease and flow. All of that bundles into this nice little package of feeling fulfilled with your life!
I love talking to people about how to build their confidence. It’s one of my favorite things to do. That’s why I’m so excited for this deep dive into just how to build your own confidence and unleash your inner power! You got this! Now get ready for a new wave of confidence.
Build Self-Awareness
Step one on this journey of confidence is becoming self-aware. Remember, this does NOT mean that you’re hyper-critical of yourself, it means having a healthy awareness of how you actually are as a person and in your professional life.
Some things that can help with this are understanding your strengths and challenges, journaling, and identifying limiting beliefs.
Let’s break that down. To understand your strengths and challenges, break down things that you’re really good at and some things that you could maybe be a little better at. For example, maybe you’re really awesome at connecting with people and expressing your ideas through words. But maybe you also struggle with numbers. This helps you have balance by really appreciating all the magical, wonderful things about yourself, while also acknowledging what you can work on (which helps give you some direction on personal growth, too).
While we’re talking about this though, it’s really important to remember that little thing about identifying limiting beliefs. Take a moment to think about all the negative things you tell yourself. How much of that is actually true? How much of it is language the world just kinda threw at you that stuck? Take some time to break down your limiting beliefs - if you think you never know how to talk to people, think about all the beautiful connections and conversations you’ve had. Then, transform your limiting belief into an empowering one: I’m great at connecting with people.
Finally, try journaling! This is gonna be helpful in all areas of your life, but it also helps you be more self-aware. Just jot down all of your thoughts and, as you go, develop an awareness of what you’re thinking and how you’re feeling. It’ll give you an amazing understanding of yourself.
Shift Your Mindset
Creating a positive mindset might seem like one of those things that’s a given, but it can be neglected more than you might think. Our mindsets are an instrumental part of building confidence, so we’re going to build on our self-awareness by integrating positivity!
One of the best ways to get started is to practice gratitude. This can be something you add into your journaling practice, but as you feel yourself start to spiral into a more negative headspace, think of three things that have happened recently that you’re grateful for. These can be big-picture things (did you get a promotion or a new client?) or small things that made you happy (like a bill being less than you thought, or your favorite coffee shop releasing a delicious seasonal drink).
The next thing you can do is tell yourself affirmations and shift the way that you speak to yourself. Your inner monologue can play a HUGE part in your general confidence. This goes hand in hand with overcoming limiting beliefs. The things you tell yourself matter. For example, when you make a mistake, making a shift from saying things like “I’m so stupid,” to “I made a mistake, but I know how to fix it,” is eons better for your mental health and confidence. That adjustment can help you remember that you are still capable and that you’re more than your mistakes.
Positive affirmations are so powerful. These can be mantras or just things that you try to remind yourself of. Making sure that you’re continuously reminding yourself of true, positive statements helps you believe in yourself more. And the best part? You can find a variety of ways to put them into practice. You can meditate on a positive affirmation, tell it to yourself periodically to feel more empowered, or start your day by going through a list of affirmations. The possibilities are endless!
Set SMART Goals
Sometimes we need to prove to ourselves that we are as awesome as we actually are. The best way to do this is by accomplishing goals and achieving your dreams. The best way to set yourself up for success on this is by setting SMART goals (aka goals that are Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant/Realistic, and Time-bound).
The whole point of SMART goals is to make sure that you’re able to actually achieve your goals. For example, setting a broad goal (like, say, learning to play the guitar) can be good, but tricky to be clear on. So maybe we can narrow that down to “I want to learn the foundations of playing the guitar by learning chords.” Then you need to decide how to measure that. For this example, you might decide that you need to be comfortable with playing all the chords and be able to transition from chord to chord (as if you’re playing the chords of a song).
Actionable means that you need to have clear steps you can take to reach your goal. For this example, maybe it’s practicing for an hour every day. Then make sure they’re relevant and realistic - is this something you can sustain and actually accomplish? Does it contribute to your long term goals? And lastly: put a timeline on your goals! You don’t want to just be chasing this into eternity, so set a timeline.
With this system, you can hold yourself accountable, achieve your goals, and prove to yourself how awesome you are!
