Developing a Truly Unique Brand Voice
Branding for your business goes well beyond the colors and pictures you use. One of the most important aspects of branding is, in fact, the brand’s voice. Your brand voice is what you say and how you say it. It represents the personality of your business and binds everything—the logo, colors, slogan, and tagline—together, which solidifies the brand tone and creates an identity that sets you apart from others in your industry.
But in a world where it can feel like everything’s been done before, it can also feel challenging to think of something totally unique. So, how do you develop a brand voice that hits the mark but also makes sense to you and feels natural?
Your Solution in Seven Steps
Here are my 7 tips to help you start to develop your unique brand voice!
1. Get really clear on your mission. You know your brand’s mission and purpose, and the voice needs to reflect that knowledge and confidence. If you’re promoting hope, speak with positivity and optimism. If you are selling practicality, keep your voice grounded and dependable.
2. Understand your values and brand culture. A credible brand voice must remain consistent and speak to your business’s core values and objectives. It also should reflect your brand’s imagery (i.e., logos, pictures, taglines) that have created the culture.
3. Think about what gives you the edge. What makes you different, unique, or novel in your industry? There’s a reason you formed this business; make sure you convey that in your voice.
4. Know your target audience. What do your customers want or expect to see from you? How you choose to communicate your brand should reflect an unchanging personality shown to consumers. The brand voice should remain consistent enough for consumers to recognize your brand no matter where they see your posts.
5. Look at what you’ve already put out into the world. You may have been doing this for a while. Maybe you’re already hitting your voice or maybe it just needs some tweaks. Pro Tip: If you change your brand voice from what you’re currently using, ease into a new one. You always can update your voice and values, but don’t confuse your audience with big, sudden changes.
6. Think about your goals for your brand voice. What do you want to accomplish with your brand voice? Is it conveying a mood, a call to action, a community?
7. Visualize your brand. Sit back and take time to really think about your brand and how it can best be represented by a consistent and intentional voice. At best, everything should work together seamlessly. If something is out of alignment, bring it back in!
